Joscha Steffens – 2081

2024

The speculative short film 2081 describes a virtual paradise, as we know it from the video game classic Legend of Zelda. A world of avatars became the effective human reality from a point of view in a still-distant but distinct moment in the future. The film follows three elves and a fortune-teller on their mission to find the lost magic items inside secret caves, mystical fountains and sacred rocks. To prevent their world from falling apart, the avatars have to succeed and unite with all the needed items in the central maze of the game. The script Joscha Steffens’ wrote for this film is based on his artistic research on the missionary online movement Gamechurch. The setting in which the film was shot has been organized as a 3-day-long LARP game taking place in Alsace, France. The film uses 360-degree imagery and classical cinema sequences to depict a life inside the video game.
